Spirit Tapestries

by Savitri L. Bess

Images from Dreamtime, Myths, Ancient Cultures

When I weave a tapestry for someone, it becomes a partnership.

I draw from many threads—meditation visions, nature, archetypes, legends and mythologies, psychology and spirituality, even the person's astrological birth chart. Sometimes the images are shamanic in nature, and therefore transformational.

The act of creating the weaving is like an archeological discovery of soul. One can contemplate the finished tapestry in the same way one would a mandala or sacred object.

Before I begin weaving, I open dialogue with you about what you might have in mind. Soon images begin to come to me, or perhaps wild animals or birds. We discuss what these might mean. We talk about color and design.

I usually make a simple pencil sketch. And then I depart from it, or it departs from me and something else takes over.

During the creation period you might have dreams or I might have dreams, or other experiences. These can be important to share.

If there is a story to go with the weaving, I would like to know about it as a collaborative event. It can be a magical part of the creative process to post the story along with the image of the completed journey. With your permission, of course. And sometimes there isn't a story; the image speaks for itself.
